THERAPY FOR DEPRESSION

BREAK THE SILENCE.
LET’S TALK ABOUT DEPRESSION.

IS DEPRESSION MAKING EVERY DAY FEEL LIKE A STRUGGLE?

Do you feel weighed down by sadness, exhaustion, or a sense of emptiness that just won’t go away? Have you lost interest in the things that once brought you joy, struggling to find motivation or purpose? Does it feel like no matter how hard you try, you just can’t shake the feelings of hopelessness or self-doubt?

Depression can affect every part of your life — your relationships, work, and even the simplest daily tasks. You might feel isolated, even when surrounded by others, or find yourself withdrawing from the people who care about you. Some days, getting out of bed may feel impossible. You may wonder if things will ever get better, questioning your worth and struggling to see a way forward.

You are not alone — hope and healing are possible. At Aspen Grove Wellness, we understand how overwhelming depression can feel, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Therapy can help you uncover the root causes of your depression, develop coping strategies, and rediscover a sense of purpose and connection.

Our compassionate, evidence-based approach provides a safe space where you can explore your thoughts and emotions, build resilience, and take meaningful steps toward healing. With the help of counseling, you can regain a sense of hope, strength, and joy — one step at a time.

WHAT DOES DEPRESSION FEEL LIKE?

While specific symptoms of depression may look different for individual people, generally the symptoms of depression include some symptoms in each of the following categories:

EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS

During a manic or hypomanic episode, individuals often experience a surge of heightened emotions, including intense euphoria or irritability. They may feel unusually energetic, overconfident, or invincible, often leading to impulsive decisions and risky behavior. Emotional stability can become compromised, with mood swings occurring rapidly. This elevated state can also bring about a sense of agitation, racing thoughts, and an overwhelming desire to engage in numerous activities simultaneously, which can make it difficult to focus or complete tasks.

COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS

Cognitive symptoms often include racing thoughts and a rapid flow of ideas that can be difficult to control or organize. Individuals may experience an inflated sense of self-esteem or grandiosity, leading to unrealistic plans or goals. Attention and concentration can become fragmented, with a tendency to jump from one topic to another. This heightened cognitive activity can result in poor judgment and impulsive decisions, as well as an increased susceptibility to distraction and difficulty in completing tasks.

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS

Physical symptoms often include increased energy levels and restlessness. Individuals may experience a decreased need for sleep, feeling rested despite only a few hours of sleep or no sleep at all. They might engage in hyperactive behaviors, such as talking rapidly, moving quickly, or undertaking multiple tasks simultaneously. This heightened physical activity can lead to fatigue and exhaustion as the episode progresses, even though the person initially feels unusually energetic.

BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS

During a manic or hypomanic episode, behavioral symptoms often include increased impulsivity and risk-taking activities. Individuals might engage in excessive spending, unrestrained social interactions, or dangerous behaviors without regard for potential consequences. They may also exhibit heightened restlessness, an increased drive to start new projects or ventures, and a tendency to interrupt others or dominate conversations. This behavior can be characterized by a notable decrease in self-control and an escalation in activities that can strain relationships and disrupt daily functioning.

TYPES OF BIPOLAR SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a serious mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed that exist for most of the day nearly every day for at least two weeks. Individuals with MDD may also experience changes in appetite or weight, disruptions in sleep patterns, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating or making decisions. Therapy for major depressive disorder aims to provide support, coping strategies, and insight to help individuals navigate their symptoms, improve their quality of life, and regain a sense of hope and purpose.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs at a particular time of year, typically during the fall and winter months when there is less natural sunlight. Symptoms of SAD may include persistent feelings of sadness, fatigue, changes in appetite or weight, and difficulty concentrating. Therapy for SAD often involves light therapy, where individuals are exposed to bright light to mimic natural sunlight, as well as cognitive-behavioral techniques to help manage symptoms and improve mood. By working with a therapist, individuals can develop strategies to cope with SAD and enjoy a better quality of life year-round.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD) is a chronic form of depression characterized by long-term feelings of sadness, low self-esteem, and a lack of interest or pleasure in daily activities. Unlike major depressive disorder, the symptoms of PDD are less severe but persist over an extended period, typically lasting for two years or more. Therapy for persistent depressive disorder focuses on helping individuals manage their symptoms, develop coping strategies, and address underlying issues contributing to their chronic depression, ultimately promoting a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood is a psychological condition characterized by the development of depressive symptoms in response to a significant life stressor or change. These symptoms may include feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities. Unlike other depressive disorders, the symptoms of adjustment disorder occur within three months of the stressful event and typically resolve once the individual has adapted to the situation or received appropriate support. Therapy for adjustment disorder with depressed mood focuses on helping individuals cope with the stressor, process their emotions, and develop healthy coping mechanisms to regain emotional balance and resilience.

Premenstrual Mood Dysphoric Disorder is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) characterized by debilitating mood swings, irritability, and depressive symptoms that occur in the days leading up to menstruation. These symptoms significantly interfere with daily functioning and quality of life and typically resolve within a few days of beginning menstruation. Therapy for PMDD focuses on addressing the cyclical nature of symptoms, providing support, and teaching coping strategies to manage mood disturbances effectively. By working with a therapist, individuals can develop personalized approaches to alleviate PMDD symptoms and improve overall well-being.

It is important to note that the nuances of life are not always captured in a simple diagnosis. Many depressive disorders co-exist with other psychiatric conditions, including anxiety and ADHD. Only trained mental health professionals who have completed a comprehensive evaluation with a specific individual can assign a diagnosis. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression, it’s important to seek professional help to receive an accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment.

You are not alone.

Depressive disorders are among the most common mental health conditions globally, affecting millions of individuals of all ages and backgrounds. According to recent statistics, approximately 1 in 5 adults will experience a depressive episode at some point in their lives. Moreover, depressive disorders can impact people of all genders, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses, highlighting the universal nature of this mental health challenge.

DON’T LET WORRY GET IN YOUR WAY

How do I know if my experience is severe enough to need therapy? Trauma isn’t solely defined by the severity of an event but by how it affects you emotionally and psychologically. Even if your experiences seem less severe than others, they can still have a significant impact on your emotional well-being and interfere with the quality of your life. Trauma therapy can help you understand and manage these feelings, providing support tailored to your unique situation. Your feelings are valid, and you don’t have to face recovery alone.

I’m worried about the cost of therapy. We understand that the cost of therapy can be intimidating and a very realistic barrier to treatment for many people. This is why we, at Aspen Grove Wellness, are in network with most major commercial payers and have a radical commitment to helping you access your health insurance benefits. If you would like to know your specific benefits, we recommend that you call the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card.

Do I have to relive painful memories in therapy? Our trained trauma therapists specialize in a number of different evidence-based and trauma informed treatment modalities. Trauma informed treatment is designed to help you process and heal from your experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Therapists use various techniques to gently guide you through your emotions at your own pace, but you remain ultimately in the driver’s seat of your therapy. The goal is not to make you relive trauma but to help you understand and manage your feelings effectively, leading to healing and empowerment.

HOW IT WORKS

TYPES OF THERAPY FOR BIPOLAR DISORDER:

Some of Our Bipolar Disorder Therapists’ Favorite Approaches

DIALECTICAL BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (DBT)

This type of therapy for bipolar disorder combines mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness skills to help manage intense mood swings and improve overall emotional stability. By learning to observe and accept their emotions without judgment, individuals can develop healthier coping strategies, reduce impulsive behaviors, and enhance their relationships. DBT’s structured approach offers practical tools for navigating the complexities of bipolar disorder and supports long-term emotional well-being.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)

Is an evidence based type of therapy for bipolar disorder. CBT modifies negative thought patterns and behaviors that can exacerbate mood episodes. CBT helps individuals recognize and challenge distorted thinking, develop practical coping strategies, and manage stress more effectively. By focusing on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, CBT empowers individuals to better manage their symptoms, maintain stability, and enhance overall functioning. This structured approach provides valuable tools for coping with mood swings and preventing relapse.

ACCEPTANCE AND COMMUTMENT THERAPY (ACT)

Helps people accept their thoughts and feelings rather than struggling against them. ACT is a type of therapy for bipolar disorder that focuses on increasing psychological flexibility. Increased cognitive flexibility enables individuals to engage in meaningful activities aligned with their values despite the presence of mood fluctuations. By fostering mindfulness and acceptance, ACT helps manage emotional distress, reduce avoidance behaviors, and promote a more fulfilling life. This approach empowers individuals to cope with their symptoms constructively and improve their overall quality of life.

INSIGHT-ORIENTED (PSYCHODYNAMIC) THERAPY

Helps individuals with bipolar disorder by exploring the underlying emotional and psychological factors contributing to their mood episodes. It focuses on increasing self-awareness and understanding of one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By uncovering the root causes of mood fluctuations and gaining deeper insight into personal patterns and triggers, individuals can develop more effective coping strategies and make meaningful changes in their lives. This enhanced self-awareness supports better management of bipolar symptoms and fosters personal growth and emotional stability.
