COGNITIVE PROCESSING THERAPY

TRANSFORMING NEGATIVE THOUGHT PATTERNS WITH CPT THERAPY FOR PTSD

WHAT IS COGNITIVE PROCESSING THERAPY (CPT)

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a specialized form of therapy designed to help individuals recover from the effects of trauma, particularly those related to experiences such as abuse, violence, or combat. At its core, CPT therapy for PTSD focuses on addressing the negative thought patterns and beliefs that arise as a result of traumatic experiences. Through structured sessions and targeted exercises, individuals learn to identify and challenge these distorted thoughts, replacing them with healthier, more adaptive ways of thinking. By processing and reframing their experiences in a safe and supportive environment, clients can regain a sense of control over their lives and move forward with greater resilience and well-being. CPT therapy offers a compassionate and evidence-based approach to healing from trauma, empowering individuals to reclaim their sense of self and find hope for the future.

HOW IT WORKS

WHAT ARE THE PHASES OF CPT THERAPY?

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

YOUR FIRST VISIT

During your initial therapy intake, you’ll find a welcoming environment where your comfort and confidentiality are prioritized. Your CPT therapist will guide you through a series of questions, gently unraveling your unique experiences, paying attention to your symptoms and goals. Your therapist will provide initial education about the cognitive model and CPT therapy. Following this session, you may be asked to write an impact statement about why your most significant traumatic event occurred. The purpose of this homework assignment is to help individuals process and organize their thoughts related to the traumatic event and provide a foundation for further exploration and discussion in therapy sessions.

BEGINNING THERAPY

In these initial sessions, you’ll work closely with our compassionate CPT therapists to establish trust and rapport, laying the groundwork for deeper exploration. Together, you’ll learn to catch, challenge, and revise the stories you have been telling yourself about why your most significant traumatic event occurred. Through structured exercises and guided discussions, you’ll learn to identify and challenge the negative beliefs and patterns that have held you back. This information will be reinforced outside of CPT therapy through the use of structured homework assignments designed to help you identify and challenge your thoughts about your most significant trauma.

MIDDLE OF THERAPY

As you progress through the middle stage of treatment, you’ll continue to develop mastery over assessing the accuracy and challenging your beliefs, as necessary. During this phase, it is common to already begin experiencing reduced symptoms as you work with your therapist to identify and challenge stuck points related to themes of safety, trust, power/control, intimacy, and esteem. Through structured exercises and thoughtful guidance, you’ll learn to reframe your experiences, finding new meaning and understanding. In this pivotal phase, you’ll cultivate resilience and empowerment, as you continue to untangle the threads of your past and pave the way for a brighter future.

ENDING THERAPY

As you near the conclusion of your treatment, you’ll reflect on the progress you’ve made and the growth you’ve experienced throughout the process. Together with our dedicated CPT therapists, you’ll celebrate victories, acknowledge challenges, and solidify the skills and insights gained during your sessions. This phase is about consolidation and closure, as you prepare to transition beyond therapy with confidence and resilience. Embrace this moment as a testament to your strength and perseverance, knowing that you are equipped with the tools and understanding to face the future with renewed hope and clarity
